Mark Lee - Graduate Engineer

I studied at the University of East London and did my year out with Birse Civils in 2006/2007 and achieved a 1st in BEng Hons Civil Engineering.

I am currently working on the M4 Jct 5-7 Bridge Improvement Project – £5.5m

The job is going great and I am starting to find my feet. The great thing is that I am already starting to take on more and more responsibility. In conjunction with the Senior Engineer I have now taken charge of the steel reinforcement ensuring that it is delivered safely and erected on site correctly. I am also working closely with the Senior Engineer who is providing setting out training and I am working with the Sub-Agent and Foreman making sure all the paperwork is up to date and completed correctly.

What I really like about Birse Civils is that, although it is part of Balfour Beatty, it still retains that small family business feel to it, where everyone knows everyone by their first name. The projects are also of a size that means that I get a broad range of experience and not tied to doing one repetitive job.

The other things I like are the people, they are friendly and helpful, the training is good too and the company has a flexible approach.
